The famous Cinerama Dome cinema in Hollywood is set to return in 2022.

A public notice of an application to sell alcoholic beverages was displayed outside the cinema on Dec. 16, with Cinerama identified as the business name. Studio distribution sources indicated that the Decurion Corporation-built theater, which has been dark since March 2020, is ready to begin showings.

Decurion's ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres stated in April 2021 that Cinerama Dome, as well as the ArcLight multiplex theater next door and 15 other venues decimated by the epidemic, will be permanently closed.

Many of Decurion's Pacific Theatre and ArcLight locations, including The Grove near West Hollywood and The Americana at Brand in Glendale, have subsequently been relinquished to AMC Theaters.

Despite overtures from competing theater circuits, Decurion has maintained control of the Cinerama Dome.

Decurion does not own the site where the ArcLight multiplex is located in Hollywood, so it is unclear whether it will reopen there as well.

The news of the permit application was originally shared on Twitter and Instagram by Save ArcLight Cinemas, a movement founded by 22-year-old director and actor Ben Steinberg.

The revelation of the Dome's closure was met with an impassioned uproar from employees, directors, and cinephiles alike, including Rian Johnson, Barry Jenkins, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Jon M. Chu, who tweeted, "What sad news. I loved this theater. And I had my first premiere for my first movie Step Up 2 the Streets there. I snuck out of the movie early so I could cut a piece of the red carpet out and keep it. It sits on my desk. Man, this is hard to read.”

The theater, which is a geodesic concrete dome with a massive curved screen, opened in 1963, just in time for the release of It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. When public outcry over Pacific Theatres' intentions to convert the land erupted in 1998, the company agreed to work with preservation groups to save the Dome and its marquee, which were proclaimed a Los Angeles historic-cultural monument simultaneously.
