'Flying Over Sunset' Finishes Broadway Run Three Weeks Early

The broadway run is ending earlier than planned.

Producer Lincoln Center Theater announced today that Flying Over Sunset will terminate its limited engagement Broadway run three weeks sooner than expected. The musical, which imagines a meeting between Aldous Huxley, Clare Boothe Luce, and Cary Grant, will have its final performance at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on Sunday, Jan. 16.

The show, which began previews on Nov. 11 and premiered on Dec. 13, was supposed to run until Feb. 6. Due to the discovery of Covid among the company, the show recently canceled a number of shows.

The production will have had 28 previews and 35 regular performances by the time it finishes.

With a screenplay and direction by James Lapine, music by Tom Kitt, lyrics by Michael Korie, and choreography by Michelle Dorrance, Flying Over Sunset got mixed-to-positive reviews (and made Deadline's Top 10 year-end best list). Along with Kanisha Marie Feliciano, Nehal Joshi, Emily Pynenburg, Michele Ragusa, Robert Sella, Laura Shoop, and Atticus Ware, the cast included Harry Hadden-Paton as Huxley, Carmen Cusack as Luce, and Tony Yazbeck as Grant.

The musical, set in the 1950s, depicted a meeting of three outspoken LSD proponents, with the celebrities and a common friend discussing their life experiences over a tripping afternoon. Beowulf Boritt designed the sets, Toni-Leslie James designed the costumes, Bradley King designed the lighting, Dan Moses Schreier designed the sound, and 59 Productions designed the projections.
