Sony Pushes Back "Morbius" Release Date

Fans have to wait a little longer for the most awaited release.

Morbius, starring Academy Award winner Jared Leto, has had its release date pushed back by Sony. While the Columbia Pictures film was originally set to debut on January 28, it will now be released on April 1 in IMAX and premium big formats.

One element prompting the effort, according to Deadline, was Sony's great (continued) success with Spider-Man: No Way Home, which debuted on December 17 and became the highest-grossing film of 2021. The Tom Holland film has so far grossed over $1.37 billion globally, and it now appears like it will continue to do well on screens once reserved for Morbius.

On its original release date, the latter superhero film would have competed with IFC Films' crime drama Clean, starring Adrien Brody, Glenn Fleshler, Richie Merritt, and Chandler DuPont; Bradley Bell and Pablo Jones-Greenwich Soler's Entertainment music doc Charli XCX: Alone Together; and Joe Wright's musical adaptation of Cyrano, starring Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett, and Kelvin Harrison Jr., for MGM It will now compete with Focus Features' horror drama You Won't Be Alone, starring Noomi Rapace and Alice Englert; Universal's Jo Koy comedy Easter Sunday, which also stars Jimmy O. Yang, Tia Carrere, Tiffany Haddish, and Lou Diamond Phillips; and STX Entertainment's thriller The Contractor, starring Chris Pine.

Leto plays the intriguing antihero Michael Morbius in filmmaker Daniel Espinosa's film Morbius. Dr. Morbius, who is critically ill with a rare blood ailment and is motivated to spare others from the same destiny, takes a risky gamble. While it appears to be a huge success at first, a darkness within him emerges. Will good triumph over evil, or will Morbius succumb to his strange new desires?

Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyres Gibson also star in the film, which is based on the Marvel Comics and was adapted from a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Lucas Foster, with Louise Rosner and Emma Ludbrook serving as executive producers.
