On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists for the Oscars in ten categories, including documentary and foreign films, for the year 2022. There's also a documentary short subject, make-up and hairstyling, original score, original song, animated short, live-action short, visual effects, and sound, which is back this year.

Out of the 92 films that were eligible, fifteen international features made it to the finals. Iran's A Hero, Italy's Hand of God, Japan's Drive My Car, and Denmark's Flee are among the frontrunners who made the cut. Titane, the French film that won the Paleme D'Or at Cannes, did not make the shortlist.

Summer of Soul, The Rescue, The Velvet Underground, and Flee were among the 108 documentary features eligible this year, and 15 made it to the shortlist, including predicted contenders like Summer of Soul, The Rescue, The Velvet Underground, and Flee.

Flee, an animated documentary, has a chance to become the first film to be nominated for best feature documentary, best international feature, and best animated feature, as well as the first documentary to be nominated for best picture. Flee by Jonas Poher Rasmussen is a personal account of the life of "Amin" (a pseudonym), a juvenile refugee who reveals his incredible escape from Afghanistan.

For his work on The Power of the Dog and Spencer, Jonny Greenwood was nominated twice for best original score. Hans Zimmer of Dune, Kris Bowers of King Richard, and Jeymes Samuel of The Harder They Fall are among the others. There were a total of 136 scores that qualified.

Billie Eilish ("No Time To Die"), Beyonce ("Be Alive"), Jay-Z ("Guns Go Bang"), Ariana Grande ("Just Look Up"), and U2 ("Your Song Saved My Life") are among the artists on the original song shortlist. Diane Warren, a 12-time nominee, was nominated for "Somehow You Do" from Four Good Days, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is up for "Dos Oruguitas" from Encanto. There were a total of 84 songs that qualified.

The visual effects category is returning this year, with blockbuster contenders that were mostly absent last year. Last year was the first year since 2009 that the VFX shortlist did not include at least one Marvel film, due to the pandemic, which forced many tentpoles to be pushed from 2020 to 2021. This year's list, however, contains Marvel's Black Widow, Shang Chi, and Eternals, as well as Spider-Man: Far From Home from Sony/Marvel. The last superhero film to win an Oscar for visual effects was Spider-Man 2 in 2004. On Jan. 29, the VFX branches' annual bake-off, which includes 10-minute clips and conversations with the competitors, will highlight the 10 shortlisted movies before branch members vote on the five nominees.

The Sound Branch resurrected its bake-off and shortlist this year, with Dune, A Quiet Place Part II, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and West Side Story among the contenders. Beginning Jan. 28, the branch will be able to watch eight-minute clips and interviews with the filmmakers from each of the selected films before voting on the category nominees.

The Academy's Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will also take part in a bake-off on Jan. 30, during which branch members will be able to see seven-minute clips from each of the shortlisted films as well as interviews with the artists.

The nominations voting period runs from January 27 to February 1, with nominees being published on February 8. The 94th Academy Awards will be place at the Dolby Theatre on March 27.
