The Brits Are Coming, an hour-long TV special that aired on ITV and ITV Hub on Saturday, announced the candidates for the 2022 BRIT Awards. The awards show will be held at the O2 Arena in London on February 8th.
Adele will have to wait nearly a year for the Grammy nominations for 2023, when her long-awaited fourth album, 30, is expected to be a significant contender.
This year, the BRITs have mixed distinct male and female categories in both artist of the year and international artist for the first time. Females took two of the five artist of the year places (Adele and Little Simz), but four of the five international artist spots went to men (Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift). In each of the last two years, Eilish has received a Brit Award for best female international performer. Swift was named a global icon last year.
Furthermore, more female musicians were nominated for Brit Awards this year than in any other year in the last decade, according to the Brits.
Griff is up for best new artist a year after winning the Brits' rising star award. The recipient of this year's rising star award, Holly Humberstone, was already announced.
While the music industry in the United States adjusts to the Grammys' last-minute expansion of eight to ten nominees in each of the Big Four categories — album, record, and song of the year plus best new artist — the Brits have (gulp) 15 nominees in each of two song categories — song of the year with Mastercard and international song of the year.
Several of this year's Brit nominees have also been nominated for Grammys in similar categories. "Happier Than Ever," "Kiss Me More," and "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" by Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, and Lil Nas X, all of which are Grammy-nominated for both record and song of the year, are fighting for international song of the year at the Brits. Rodrigo's "Good 4 U" is also nominated for Grammys for record and song of the year, but with a different success, "Driver's License."
Along with BTS, Mneskin, Silk Sonic, and The War on Drugs, ABBA, who garnered their first Grammy nomination last month, won a Brit nomination for international group. Elton John received his first Brit nomination in 20 years for song of the year for his hit collaboration with Dua Lipa, "Cold Heart (Pnau Mix)."
Sam Fender, who won the rising star award two years ago, as well as West London rapper Central Cee and French DJ/producer David Guetta, are all nominated for three Brits.
The four new genre categories – rock/alternative artist, hip hop/grime/rap act, dance act, and pop/RB act – will be decided by a public vote on TikTok, which will begin on January 21.
Anne-Marie, Glass Animals, Mimi Webb, and Joel Corry Gracey all performed on the Brits Are Coming special. Clara Amfo and Maya Jama hosted the special.
The Brit Awards, which are sponsored by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), will be hosted by British comedian Mo Gilligan.
