Halsey sings on a variety of topics, including loneliness, crowns, and Judas ("Jesus needed a three-day weekend/To sort out all his crap"), but her lyrics are mostly about a sense of dread that is hovering over her. "Don't wait for me," they yell over the clamor of the crowd, "because it's not going to go well." Rather of keeping to a single style, Reznor and Ross experiment with a wide range of sounds throughout the album, alluding to a darker undertone that never materializes fully. They suffocate melodies with reverberating cries and screeching sirens, and the ensuing cacophony may be a barrier to listening. It might be unpleasant at times, but it is not always unexpected. During the song "honey," the frenetic drumming and guitar alternate with Dave Grohl behind the kit and a cyborg accent from the hyperpop album. The music is lively and entertaining. During the song "Lilith," Halsey declares, "I've been harmed," and the final note is drowned in a glitch spasm. Halsey's latest incredible Punk Rock album is a must-listen for anybody in the mood for some eargasmic music.
