The Costume Designers Guild announced its 24th annual CDG Award candidates on Wednesday, recognizing excellence in the art across eight cinema, television, and short-form categories. The winners will be unveiled at an in-person ceremony on March 9 at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, according to the guild.
IATSE Local 892 members vote on nominees in three film categories: period, contemporary, and science fiction/fantasy. Costume designers from fashion-forward films including MGM/House UAR's of Gucci (Janty Yates), Disney's Cruella (Jenny Beavan), and A24's wild ride Zola are among the notable nominees this morning (Derica Cole Washington). Ruth E. Carter, the Oscar winner for Black Panther, was also nominated for Amazon's Coming 2 America.
Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as well as DC's The Suicide Squad, were all mentioned in today's nominations. Loki and WandaVision from Disney+ were also nominated in the TV category.
Designer Jeriana San Juan for Netflix's fashion icon story Halston, Fox's The Masked Singer and ABC's Dancing With the Stars, and NBC's Annie Live! were among the other major TV nominations. as well as Saturday Night Live
Last year's virtual ceremony saw Ann Roth of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom win for Period, Nancy Steiner of Promising Young Woman win for Contemporary, and Bina Daigeler of Mulan win for Sci-Fi/Fantasy. After winning the Academy Award for The English Patient in 1997, Roth went on to win the Oscar for Costume Design.
The guild indicated that the host, presenters, and additional honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.
"Throughout the pandemic, we’ve been reminded how important costume design is, not only to entertain—but to inspire,” said CDG president Salvador Perez. “We are thrilled to celebrate in person this year, with safety as our priority. We want to recognize our nominees and all of their phenomenal work as we take the CDGA into a new direction.”
