Turning Red, a Disney-Pixar film, will not be released in theaters on Friday, March 11. Instead, it'll be available exclusively on Disney+ around the world, a significant setback for movie theaters hoping to screen this title at a time when Omicron was trying to relax.
After Soul and Luca, it's the third Pixar film to bypass cinemas and go straight to Disney+.
Turning Red will be distributed theatrically in worldwide regions where Disney+ is not available, with dates to be announced.
It would be prudent for Disney to know ahead of time if a film is intended for theaters or Disney+ based on its diagnosis. It's simply the right thing to do for cinemas, which have been severely harmed by the pandemic. Don't date a film if Disney doesn't have theatrical confidence in it - it's as simple as that. Don't tease theaters who are dependent on a particular amount of revenue from you. Isn't that reasonable, Disney?
According to Samba TV, Soul earned a 2.4 million first-weekend audience in smart TV homes from December 25-27, 2020. Samba TV did not track Luca, therefore there is no way of knowing if it was a success.
Raya and the Last Dragon was released in theaters and on Disney+ last year, just as movie theaters were reopening in New York City and Los Angeles. Cinemark initially refused to show the film due to contractual issues. The film was a flop at the box office. with $54.7 million in the bank Samba TV didn't track viewership for that animated film, either.
