Ontario Movie Theatres Close Down Due To Omicron Surge

Omicron surge closes down more businesses.

Due to the Omicron post-holiday surge, the domestic box office is poised to take a single-percentile hit as the province of Ontario, Canada, which contains box office capital Toronto, closes theaters.

Movie theaters will close in two days, with the country's largest chain, Cineplex, closing 67 locations temporarily and reopening as soon as possible.

“Based on recent government directives, all 67 of our theatres in Ontario will be closed as of Wednesday, January 5, and will reopen as soon as we are allowed," a Cineplex rep told Deadline. "All bookings will be cancelled for a full refund. To make it as easy as possible, we have already begun processing ticket refunds back to our guests’ original method of payment. There is no need for guests to contact our Guest Services or their local theatre team for a refund.”

Following Quebec's two-week closure of pubs, movies, and gyms due to Covid, Ontario has announced the closure of theaters.

Canada contributed 7% of Spider-Man: No Way Home's $260 million opening weekend, which was the second biggest of all time in the United States and Canada.

Ontario accounted for just 2.1 percent of American box office this weekend, but nearly 40% of Canadian box office.

The Toronto Film Festival was able to convince Canada to open its borders to Americans just days before the event this past September. The festival ran its movie theaters at a restricted capacity and did not offer concessions, a policy that the Sundance Film Festival will follow from January 20 to January 30 in Park City, Utah.

The news of Ontario movie theater closures was first reported by THR.
