In a surprising turn of events, famous rapper Drake has asked the Recording Academy to withdraw his nominations for the 2022 Grammy Awards.
Back in November, he was announced to be nominated for Best Rap Performance for his song "Way 2 Sexy" which features fellow rappers Young Thug and Future, and Best Rap Album for his sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boy.
Numerous sources have revealed, which were later confirmed by Variety, that Drake and his management themselves were the ones made the request to remove his nomination from the final-round ballot to the Recording Academy.
Currently, in the rapper's artist page on the Grammys' website, his 2022 nominations are no longer visible. Furthermore, the Recording Academy also made their nomination changes to its list of updates.
There are no reported announcement yet on why the Canadian rapper and his management withdrew nominations. However, speculations are running rampant due to the artist's decision to speak out against the Recording Academy after he learned of The Weeknd's high-profile snub from the Grammys' last year.
Shortly after the 2021 nominations were announced in November, Drake took to his Instagram saying, “I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones that come after. It’s like a relative you keep expecting to fix up but they just can’t change their ways.”
In the past, the rapper had not been shy to speak up on his frustration over his own previous nominations and wins in the awards show. For the 2018 Grammy Awards, numerous reports were saying that the Certified Lover Boy singer declined to submit his mixtape More Life for consideration to be nominated at the 2018 Grammy Awards. He also hit out at the Recording Academy when he stated that they were only acknowledging him as a rap artist when his songs were in the pop genre. At the 2017 Grammy Awards, Drake was nominated for "Hotling Bling" while he won the Best Rapo Song and Best Rap/Sung collaboration awards.
In an interview back in 2017, he said, "I'm a Black artist. I'm apparently a rapper even though 'Hotline Bling' is not a rap spng. The only catefory that they can manage to fit me in is in a rap category, maybe because I've rapped in the past or because I'm Black. I won two awards, but I don't even want them because it feels weird to me."
It can be observed that in the 2022 nominations, the rapper was once again snubbed out of the major categories.
