Netflix and Marvel promptly commissioned a spinoff series starring Jon Bernthal as The Punisher after he made his debut as Frank Castle in Daredevil's second season. Bernthal's acting as the vigilante, as well as the show's treatment of grim subject matter, earned the series critical acclaim. The Punisher was canceled after two seasons, along with the rest of the Netflix Marvel programs.
Fans have been waiting for Jon Bernthal to return to his role as Frank Castle ever since. Because the difficulties of integrating the Netflix Marvel characters into the bigger MCU are unclear, fans have hoped to see the actor take on the role of Wolverine, which has been vacant since 2017.
Jon Bernthal was asked about how ready fans are to see him as Wolverine if he does not return to The Punisher in an interview with Forbes. Bernthal frankly answered fan requests, but stated that he would like to return as Frank Castle rather than join the MCU as a mutant.
It's unclear who will portray Wolverine when he eventually joins the MCU, but Jon Bernthal has made it obvious to all of us that he still wants to continue as The Punisher. Bernthal recently showed interest in reprising the role, so perhaps Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is paying attention!
