Good Will Hunting's screenwriters Ben Affleck and Matt Damon set a high bar for themselves in 1997.
With nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, the Robin Williams vehicle was a big hit. Although Titanic took home the top two awards, the Boston-based team won the award for Best Original Screenplay by defeating Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights and As Good as It Gets.
Although Damon and Affleck had great hopes for their reuniting, it wasn't because of the pressure. It was all a matter of preparation, according to Damon.
At the New York premiere of The Last Duel, Damon told E! News' Victor Cruz that he and Affleck "assumed [writing] would be so time demanding that we'd never be able to accomplish it."
The Talented Mr. Ripley star confessed that he and Affleck were worried they'd "never find the time" to write another film like Good Will Hunting because of their busy schedules and families. However, they came to the realization that "if we only work during hours that we can readily carve out, we can accomplish a great deal" While Damon admits that they had expected the project to be challenging, it turned out to be easier than they had expected.
For his part in The Last Duel, Affleck said it was a delight to be back on set with his friend Jodie Comer from Killing Eve. Having so much fun doing this, it was like, why don't we do this more?" the actor exclaimed. What exactly have we been up to lately? When it comes to Affleck's love life, Damon is there for him. When asked if he was glad for Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, the Jason Bourne actor replied, "I'm thrilled for them both." "We all deserve love, so why should they be any different?"
The Last Duel will be released on October 15th, 2015, in theaters.
