'Uncharted' Confirms Release Date in China

Check out when the Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg film will be available in China.

Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, has been set for a March 14 release in China by Sony. The news was announced today on the studio's Weibo account, which included a video message from Holland and Wahlberg, a subtitled trailer, and a new poster (see it in full below). This comes as China has set a release date for Warner Bros./DC's The Batman, which will be released on March 18.

The domestic release of Uncharted does not coincide with the global release, which began previews last weekend. It does, however, allow Sony a few weeks' advance time for marketing and promotion, something we've seen happen a little more frequently in China recently than last year. While the dates for The Batman and Uncharted may indicate a move from 2021, Sony's Holland-led Spider-Man: No Way Home is still missing from the Chinese schedule, owing to what has amounted to an unofficial Marvel ban over the past year. Despite the lack of a market, that film has grossed over $1.8 billion worldwide.

The only Hollywood films with set release dates in China are Uncharted, The Batman, and Disney/20th Century's Death On The Nile – but Uncharted and DOTN are released on odd days of the week. In the case of the latter, it will be released on Saturday, whereas Uncharted will be released on Monday.

Uncharted, directed by Ruben Fleischer and based on a PlayStation game by Naughty Dog, grossed $21.5 million in 15 international markets last weekend, including No. 1s in each. With North America and 47 new abroad hubs, including France, Korea, Australia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and Norway, it is aiming for a $70 million global haul this year.

Holland portrays streetwise Nathan Drake, who is hired by seasoned treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Wahlberg) to collect a riches acquired by Ferdinand Magellan and lost by the House of Moncada 500 years ago.

Holland and the rest of the team recently returned from a European tour that took them to Paris, Madrid, and Rome. Holland triggered a near-riot in Paris on Friday when he surprised fans during a preview screening at the Grand Rex theater.
