On Sunday, NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt will sit down with President Joe Biden for a Super Bowl pre-game presidential interview.

During the interview, the president will be in Virginia, where he will be on Thursday. On Thursday, portions of the show will appear on NBC Nightly News, with further highlights on Today, MSNBC, NBCNews.com, and NBC News Now the next day. More clips will also be available on NBC Nightly News.

When CBS got the Super Bowl rights last year, Norah O'Donnell interviewed Biden.

When President George W. Bush was interviewed by Jim Nantz in 2004, the tradition of a presidential pre-game interview began. Matt Lauer gave an interview with Barack Obama in 2009. Throughout his presidency, Obama kept the habit.

When Fox acquired the rights in 2017, Donald Trump also did pre-game sitdowns, commencing with a sitdown with Bill O'Reilly in 2017. The following year, when NBC acquired the rights, Trump skipped out, but returned the following year. He spoke with Margaret Brennan, the moderator of CBS's Face the Nation, in 2019. In an interview that aired before the 2020 Super Bowl, Trump chatted with Sean Hannity of Fox News.

The advantage of such interviews for the White House is obvious: a wide audience. However, some of the interviews have sparked controversy, such as when Trump appeared to defend Vladimir Putin in an interview with Bill O'Reilly in 2017.
