The Washington Commanders are the new name for the Washington-based D.C. NFL team. After a nearly two-year hunt for a new title, the area has a new moniker.

The name had been leaking for the past two days, but it was finally revealed on NBC's Today show. It takes the place of the team's temporary generic name, "Washington Football Team," which has been in place since the Redskins were discarded following years of protests that the name was racist and insulting to Native Americans.

With a new video featuring rapid edits and an action movie-like music, the name was also revealed on Twitter.

In a statement, co-owner and co-CEO Dan Snyder said, “As an organization, we are excited to rally and rise together as one under our new identity while paying homage to our local roots and what it means to represent the nation’s capital. As we kick-off our 90th season, it is important for our organization and fans to pay tribute to our past traditions, history, legacy and the greats that came before us.” He noted that the team’s logo and look “continue to honor and represent the Burgundy Gold while forging a pathway to a new era in Washington. Today may mark the first day for the Washington Commanders, but we are and always will be Washington.”

The club now plays at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, roughly nine miles from the Capitol, but Virginia lawmakers have introduced laws in an attempt to bring the team to D.C. In that state, there are a lot of suburbs.
The name was chosen after more than 40,000 fan submissions, as well as polls and focus groups, according to the team. In 1937, the club relocated to Washington and has since won three Super Bowls.

Following concerns that the Indians were racially offensive, Cleveland's baseball team announced a new name — the Guardians — last year.
