Since 2020's "Blinding Lights," The Weeknd has made a habit of shattering listener records. Following the release of his Dawn FM album earlier this month, the Toronto crooner managed to break the record for monthly listens on the streaming giant, which was previously held by pop singer Justin Bieber.
According to Spotify, The Weeknd now has 85.86 million listeners, breaking Justin Bieber's previous record of 83.86 million listeners. When compared to the other artists on the list, The Weeknd has four million more listeners than Ed Sheeran, who is in third place, and roughly 20 million more than Dua Lipa, who is in fourth place.
Timbaland has already compared Dawn FM to Michael Jackson's 1982 chart-topper Thriller, claiming that the album is on par with Michael Jackson's Thriller. Timbo even threw down the gauntlet by pointing out that famed producer Quincy Jones' résumé wasn't validated until he worked on Thriller.
The problem with the position stemmed from the fact that Jones had already had enormous success with Jackson on Off The Wall. Jones received 11 Grammy Awards between 1964 and 1982 for his solo work and collaborations with jazz greats George Benson, Count Bassie, Duke Ellington, and Lena Horne.
Dawn FM may have broken Billboard and Spotify records around the world, but the album has yet to reach the top of the Billboard 200 chart. The album eventually settled for second place on the Billboard 200 chart, behind Gunna's DS4EVER, after earlier estimates had it joining the likes of Beauty Behind The Madness, Starboy, and After Hours.
Despite the fact that Dawn FM didn't reach the top place, The Weeknd assured fans that the album's lack of physical copies was not a gimmick to improve streaming figures.
“This doesn’t matter to me,” The Weeknd told a fan. “What matters is getting to experience the album together with the fans during these times.”
