NASA Names Katherine Calvin As New Chief Scientist, Senior Climate Advisor

NASA mentions that she will act as principal advisor to agency leadership on #NASAScience.

Dr Katherine Calvin was selected as the new chief scientist and senior climate advisor by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Monday. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson announced in a press statement that Dr Calvin will take on the twin positions beginning Monday. Calvin will use her expertise as top scientist to assist the agency on science programs, as well as science-related strategic planning and investments. NASA's climate-related science, technology, and infrastructure activities will benefit from her views and suggestions as a senior climate advisor, according to the agency's statement.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Kate to the NASA family, where she will bring her expertise in integrated human-Earth system modeling to help ensure the Biden Administration has the data needed to achieve the critical goal of protecting our planet," NASA administrator Nelson said in a statement.

He also expressed gratitude to the previous experts who held the role and performed admirably. “I also want to thank Jim and Gavin for their invaluable leadership to NASA and the world as chief scientist and senior climate advisor," Nelson added. It's worth noting that Dr. Calvin took over as chief scientist from Jim Green, who retired on January 1 after 40 years of service, and Gavin Schmidt has been the senior climate advisor since February 2021.

Dr. Calvin will now serve as NASA's chief advisor, overseeing all science programs, strategic planning, policy, and implementation of the goals. She'll also speak on behalf of NASA's contributions to the national and international communities. "NASA is an international leader in climate and Earth science research. Dr Calvin expressed her excitement in a statement, saying, "I'm excited to be a member of the team that is helping to progress this essential science mission."
