In a private ceremony at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will announce the winners of its 79th annual Golden Globe Awards. The event, which began at 6 p.m., was scaled back. PT, as the HFPAaa continues to undertake reforms in the wake of allegations of long-standing diversity and organizational inadequacies within the group comprised up of journalists covering Hollywood for outlets all over the world, will not be televised or even livestreamed this year.
The group named Netflix's The Power of the Dog as the Best Motion Picture – Drama and 20th Century Studios' West Side Story wins the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. In television, HBO's Succession took up the best drama award, while HBO/HBO Max's Hacks earned best musical or comedy. Aside from those four titles, no one else received multiple awards.
This year's event, which had no red carpet and focused on the HFPA's humanitarian initiatives, featured no celebrity presenters or nominees; representatives from groups that have received money from the association introduced the nominations and winners. The only others in attendance were HFPA executives and members, the latter a rising group as a result of reforms aimed at ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity, and inclusion, governance, and more.
NBC has announced that it will not broadcast this year's awards presentation, studios and streamers have been hesitant to participate, and big PR firms have mostly boycotted the HFPA while it continues to mend its course.
On the film side, West Side Story and The Power of the Dog both took home three awards, with Rachel Zegler (Lead Actress – Musical or Comedy) and Ariana DeBose (Supporting Actress) winning for West Side, and Jane Campion's directing and Kodi Smit-McPhee winning for Power of the Dog.
For King Richard and Being the Ricardos, Will Smith and Nicole Kidman won Lead Actor – Drama and Lead Actress – Drama, respectively, while Andrew Garfield won Lead Actor – Musical or Comedy for Tick, Tick...Boom! Encanto, a Disney animated film, and Drive My Car, a Japanese non-English language film, were also winners.
In television, Succession took up three awards, including the top prize, with Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook also receiving nominations. Jean Smart received Best Actress for HBO/HBO Max's Hacks, and Jason Sudeikis won Best Actor for Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso. The Underground Railroad on Prime Video received Best Limited Series, while Pose's Mj Rodriguez got Best Actress and Netflix's Squid Game's O Yeong-Su won Supporting Actor.
In terms of the actual nominations, the HFPA waived all submission restrictions for this year's Globes, with a similarly low-key announcement in December resulting in Belfast from Focus Features and The Power of the Dog from Netflix dominating the film categories with seven each. Tonight, West Side Story took home three of the four awards, while Kenneth Branagh's script for Belfast took home one.
HBO/HBO Max led the TV category with ten nominations, including a tie for first place with five for Succession.
