2022 Palm Springs International Film Festival Announces Cancellation

It is one of the many events affected by the pandemic.

Another event has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic: the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The Palm Springs International Film Society announced the cancellation on Wednesday, citing "the current rise of COVID cases." The festival was set to take place from Jan. 7 to 17, and the cancellation comes after the festival had previously canceled its star-studded Film Awards night.

“After thoughtful consideration, the Film Society feels this is the most responsible decision to ensure the safety of our patrons, filmmakers and staff. Those who have purchased festival tickets and passes will receive a refund. For most, the refund will be returned to their original method of payment,” the Film Society said in a statement.

The Palm Springs ShortFest, set for June 21-27, is still on the books, according to the Film Society, and the film festival and awards banquet will return to an in-person event in January 2023. After the 2021 edition, the Palm Springs festival and awards night will be canceled for the second year in a row owing to the pandemic. Film Gala awardees will get a virtual tribute, as they did last year, thanks to a partnership with Entertainment Tonight.

PSIFF is also ensuring that some of the films picked for the 2022 season will be given a chance to shine, as the jury will continue to announce award winners from the official selection via press release and social media on Jan. 15.
