'Parasite' Actress Park Sodam Diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer

South Korean actress and one of the leads of Bong Joon Ho's Oscar-winning film, 'Parasite,' Park Sodam, has been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer and is currently recovering after surgery.

Park So Dam's agency, Artist Company, released an official statement about the actress' health on December 13th. According to the statement, Park So Dam was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and had surgery as recommended by a healthcare specialist. The whole statement can be found below:

"During a routine physical examination, actress Park So Dam was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had surgery as recommended by her doctor.

The actress regrets that she was unable to attend the premiere of 'Special Cargo,' which she had been looking forward to. Park So Dam is unable to participate in the promotion of the film 'Special Cargo,' but she is enthusiastic about the premiere.

Thank you to everyone who has supported actress Park So Dam and the film, including the cast and crew of 'Special Cargo.'

Actress Park So Dam will concentrate on her recovery so that she may greet you all in a healthy state, and we will do everything we can to assist her in her recovery.

Park rose to prominence with her critically lauded performance in Parasite as Kim Ki-jung, the conniving Kim family's daughter who is employed as a therapist by the wealthy Park family. The film, which was released in 2019, achieved the rare accomplishment of winning both the Palme d'Or and the Oscar for Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards.
