The Boys spin-off moving forward at Amazon with "Agent Carter" showrunners

It will be set in a college for aspiring superheroes.

Amazon is developing a spin-off of The Boys.

The retail behemoth/streamer has given its college-set spinoff from Eric Kripke's breakthrough superhero drama a series order. Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, who previously oversaw ABC Marvel drama Agent Carter, have joined the untitled project as showrunners as part of the deal. Craig Rosenberg, who left the show due to creative disputes with Amazon and producers Sony Pictures TV, has been replaced by the writing pair.

The untitled project, which has been in development for more than a year, is set at America's first institution dedicated just to young-adult superheroes (run by Vought International). It's characterized as an irreverent, R-rated sitcom about hormonal, competitive superheroes who test their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries while fighting for the greatest contracts in the best cities. It's part collegiate comedy, part Hunger Games, with all of The Boys' heart, humor, and raunch.

The young superheroes will be played by Jaz Sinclair (Sabrina), Lizze Broadway (Here and Now), Shane Paul McGhie (Unbelievable), Aimee Carrero (Elena of Avalor), Reina Hardesty (Brockmire), and Maddie Phillips (Teenage Bounty Hunters). More castings are scheduled to be announced in the future.

Along with showrunner Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur, Pavun Shetty, Ken Levin, Jason Netter, Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, and Michaela Starr (Law Order: SVU, Reaper, Emergence, The X-Files), exec produce with Fazekas and Butters (Law Order: SVU, Reaper, Emergence).

“In the same way that Mork Mindy spun out from Happy Days — which is an incredible and real thing — our spinoff will exist within the Vought Cinematic Universe but have its own tone and style. “It's our take on a college show, with a cast of fascinating, complicated, and occasionally lethal Young Supes,” Kripke explained. “Michele and Tara are absolute geniuses, and we're ecstatic to have them in charge. We're grateful to Sony and Amazon for the opportunity. This show is fantastic, and we can't wait for you to see it. In addition, Baywatch Nights was a spin-off from Baywatch that featured vampires. Vampires!”

For Amazon Studios, The Boys has become a rare breakout and awards contender. As part of a total of five Emmy nominations earlier this year, the flagship received a stunning nod for outstanding drama series. Season three of The Boys has concluded filming; a launch date has yet to be confirmed. The Boys is one of many streaming series that became a franchise after breaking through the noise and gaining a following. Netflix's The Witcher, which expanded to many shows during its first season, is another streaming series that has gotten quick spinoffs.

Amazon also has a TV series based on The Lord of the Rings set to premiere in September 2022, with potential spinoffs rumored to be part of the $250 million global rights deal that landed the IP.
