Chris Cuomo has been terminated by CNN "effective immediately".
Earlier this week, Cuomo was only suspended by CNN after an investigation into his conduct with regards to his involvement in his brother Andrew Cuomo's allegations of sexual harassment. The former New York governor is currently facing accusations and allegations of sexual harassment from eleven (11) women which resulted to his resignation as the Governor of New York.
CNN released in their statement, "Chris Cuomo was suspended earlier this week pending further evaluation of new information that came to light about his involvement with his brother’s defense. We retained a respected law firm to conduct the review, and have terminated him, effective immediately. While in the process of that review, additional information has come to light. Despite the termination, we will investigate as appropriate."
Immediately after news of his termination from the network was released, Cuomo posted a statement on Twitter saying, "This is not how I want my time at CNN to end but I’ve already told you why and how I helped my brother,” he wrote. “So let me now say as disappointing as this is, I could not be more proud of the team at Cuomo Prime Time and the work we did as CNN’s #1 show in the most competitive time slot. I owe them all and we’ll miss that group of special people who really did important work."
Chris Cuomo was hired by CNN in 2013, where he began co-hosting its morning show. In 2018, he was moved to prime time for his weeknight news analysis series "Cuomo Prime Time" which remains to be the network's highest-rated show. His previous works included being a co-anchor for 20/20 and was the chief law and justice correspondent for ABC News. He first started out as a correspondent and political analyst in Fox News Channel before serving as an anchor for ABC News' Good Morning America from 2006 to 2009.
In a report publised by The Hollywood Reporter, Cuomo was revealed to not only participate in strategy sessions with his brother and his staff which helped the former Governor formulate answers to the numerous allegations against him but also used his contacts and sources to uncover details about his brother's accusers. Using his position as a journalist, he collected information about news and stories on his brother's case coming through the pipeline.
On Monday, after an outside law firm was retained to review information about the younger Cuomo's involvement in his brother's case, it was revealed by the New York Attorney-General's Office that Cuomo had been gathering materials and data on a story being developed by journalist Ronan Farrow for The New Yorker, and had followed intel aroung the timing of its publishing and whether Farrow came across new accusers. He was basically working as an aide to the governor.
The Hollywood Reporter also reported that Chris Cuomo told investigators, "I wasn’t going to call Ronan Farrow. I wasn’t going to try to influence any of the stories. And we know that that’s true because you would have read about it had I. It’s not exactly a loyalty-based business. If I had tried to influence any of the reporting at CNN or anywhere else, I guarantee you, you people would know, and so would a lot of others. So the idea of one reporter calling another to find out about what’s coming down the pipe is completely business-as-usual.”
After reviewing the deposition and unsealed documents showed by the New York Attorney General's Office, it was revealed that Cuomo had asked for assistance from one of his brother's aides, Melissa DeRosa, in responding to accusations against Andrew Cuomo. Using his network of sources as a journalist, he acquired more details surrounding the woman that accused his brother of inappropriate touching at a wedding. He shared to his brother's team, "I have a lead on the wedding girl," after being given information from a friend of the bride's family.
Due to the findings of the investigation, on Saturday, CNN terminated Chris Cuomo for serious breach of CNN standards.
