Jeffree Star, the beauty guru, has revealed that his next video would feature an old buddy, Shane Dawson, who hasn't been on YouTube with him since January 2020. According to a tweet by Star on Tuesday, the two will discuss why their 2019 cosmetic products are being offered at Nordstrom Rack.
Star and Dawson were the reigning YouTube duo two years ago. They reportedly sold out of the Shane x Jeffree Conspiracy Collection by Jeffree Star Cosmetics' flagship eyeshadow palette in minutes — eventually earning millions of dollars, according to an Insider analysis of the collaboration's sales — and each received hundreds of millions of views on YouTube in 2018 and 2019. Then, in June 2020, their celebrity began to fade as the internet revisited racist tweets and improper comments about children made by both of them in the past.
Star, who has 16 million subscribers, has mocked rival beauty products offered at bargain retailers like T.J. Maxx in the past, but according to social media posts, his Jeffree Star Cosmetics items have subsequently been discovered at European T.K. Maxx stores (T.J. Maxx's European counterpart).
Star stated in an Instagram post on Tuesday that he and Dawson will discuss about "drama, issues, and worries" fans have about their cosmetics being offered by Nordstrom. Dawson has 20 million followers but last published on YouTube in June 2020. Star claimed in a tweet that he would be "honest" about how his cosmetics landed up in other retailers for a reduced price.
A Star x Dawson lipstick that retailed for $18 was seen on social media being offered for $10.97 at Nordstrom Rack. The merchandise appears to have been withdrawn from the website of the cheap designer store.
Star also indicated in his Instagram story that he'll explain why he removed his most recent YouTube video, which was a collaboration with his long-time makeup artist and buddy LipstickNick. Critics thought that Star removed the video due to low viewership. Star tweeted on Monday, asking if he should reupload the video, indicating that he deleted it because of "mean" comments.
Star's followers reacted warmly to the new Dawson video announcement on social media, but it garnered far less enthusiasm than when the two were at the height of their fame, when they would collaborate to create whole news cycles in the beauty YouTube world.
Dawson's recent appearances on his fiancé Ryland Adams' podcast have received little attention. He's a far way from his YouTube documentary days, when his films frequently topped 20 million views, with his most recent interview garnering less than 300,000 views in six days.
According to Insider's 2021 influencer index, Star's popularity has dropped by more than 6% between April and August 2021. Dawson, on the other hand, saw the greatest decrease in recognizability, dropping 23% over the same time period.
Both Star and Dawson have started the process of relocating from Los Angeles. Star divides his time between his California cosmetics headquarters and his new Wyoming ranch and yak farm. Dawson and Adams recently relocated to a $2.2 million property in Colorado, where Adams expressed his desire to raise a family.
