Spotlight on Wi Hajoon

From a simple farm boy to a Netflix sensation, here are some things you should know about him.

Squid Game on Netflix is officially the most-watched K-drama in over 90 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. In addition to the intense survival game action, the program has interesting characters such as fan favorite investigator Hwang Jun-ho, played by actor Wi Ha-joon.

Wi's Instagram profile experienced a big increase following the show's premiere as a result of its popularity. As of this writing, he has 6.9 million followers and counting, up from 300,000 before to the screening of Squid Game, according to AllKPop.

So, what do we know about Korea's most recent rising star?

1. He is a family man.

The singer, who turned 30 in August, grew raised in South Korea's South Jeolla Province. During a guest appearance on the variety show Problem Child in the House, he revealed that his father owns an abalone farm.

Wi is a family man who enjoys spending time with his lovely niece and nephew. We can see them playing on a swing set or his niece kissing Wi on the cheek in multiple Instagram videos, prompting him to comment, "whether it's a kiss or a headbutt, I am healed best because of you."

In a horror show, he got his big break.

He began his career in the short film Peace in Them (2012), but it took him six years to get his big break with the horror blockbuster Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018). He later starred in the K-dramas Something in the Rain (2018), Romance is a Bonus Book (2019), and 18 Again as a supporting actor (2020).

Wi appears in two films this year, in addition to Squid Game: Midnight and Shark: The Beginning. He will also appear as "K" in TVN's K-drama Bad and Crazy, which will be released in December, with Lee Dong-wook and Han Ji-eun.

He has a bromance with his co-stars.

Wi starred as a successful book designer in the K-drama Romance is a Bonus Book (2019), where he drew notice due to his bromance with fellow actor Lee Jong-suk.

Soompi stated in an interview that his role matched his real-life personality: "I prefer to get along with males while playfully battling." Lee Jong-suk greeted me warmly and took excellent care of me. He also gave me a lot of encouragement and praise, so I felt the most at ease on set."

He exercises... a lot.

Wi almost shattered the internet earlier this month when he posed shirtless for his first Men's Health Korea cover shoot. During the conversation, the actor discussed his workout routine.

"I've been working out to gain muscle since I was in the service." "I used to attend to the gym five days a week to practice, but because of the epidemic, I now work out at home," he explained. As seen by his Instagram page, the Korean star enjoys sports such as acrobatics and volleyball.

He is a huge fan of Squid Game.

Wi told Men's Health Korea that he enjoys the show. "I read the script in a flash and was taken away by how immersive it was." "I'd never seen anything like that before," he added.

While his character doesn't have many scenes with Squid Game main actor Lee Jung-jae, Wi is a huge fan and has stated that Lee's performance has "truly influenced" him.

In another interview with K Bi Zoom, Wi admitted that he was apprehensive when portraying his on-screen sibling alongside Korean legendary actor Lee Byung-hun... However, it turned out to be a fantastic experience. "When we shot together, I thought it was much better than I had imagined." I was moved because he looked after me even while we weren't on-screen."
