Smooth. In the Heights, a stage adaption of his first Broadway show, and tick, tick...BOOM!, his feature directorial debut, premiered in June. Rent, a musical largely inspired on the plot of Puccini's opera La bohème, was composed and created by Larson.
After just releasing Vivo, the Netflix animated musical comedy that featured his own songs and in which he executive produced and performed, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the man behind Hamilton and In the Heights, is having an especially busy year with his latest work. There was also a film adaptation of In the Heights that came out not too long ago.
An autobiographical pre-Rent musical by composer Jonathan Larson will be adapted into a new film starring Andrew Garfield as the character based on Larson's autobiography. Tick, tick...BOOM! will debut on Netflix and in theaters this fall. When the clock strikes twelve on November 12, Tick, Tick...BOOM! will go on the air.
The film is scheduled for release on the 12th of November. On the 19th of November, it'll be accessible to watch on Netflix. Tick, tick...BOOM! will have its international premiere at the 2021 AFI Festival on November 10th.
Fans of Miranda's other 2021 film musical, In the Heights, can watch it on HBO Max in the meantime. Tick, Tick...BOOMfirst !'s trailer debuted on Netflix on October 4th. There are some songs from Rent in the trailer that introduce Jonathan Larson before he wrote Rent. The film is a remake of Jonathan Larson's stage play of the same name.
Jonathan (Garfield) is a young New York City composer who dreams of writing the next great American musical in the film set in 1990. Jonathan's uneasiness grows throughout the original play as he challenges his artistic profession and battles with his fiancée, friends, and even himself. Jon is grappling with his own mortality while dealing with the devastating effects of the AIDS epidemic on the city's creative scene. Because he died on January 25, 1996, the morning of the first off-Broadway preview of Rent, real-life Jonathan Larson never got to witness his two great American musicals. His autobiographical film was shot posthumously, which adds an additional layer of poignancy to its release date of 2016.
Jon, an aspiring composer, will be played by Andrew Garfield.
Garfield is portraying Larson, who inspired the character. Alexandra Shipp, who plays Jon's girlfriend Susan and aspires to have a creative career outside of New York City, is also in the film. Robin de Jess plays Michael, a friend of Jon's, while Joshua Henry and Vanessa Hudgens take on the roles of Roger and Karessa, two of the vocalists in Jon's concert. Another character played by Bradley Whitford is that of well-known Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim. Judith Light, Tariq Trotter, and MJ Rodriguez are also planning to take part.
