The two-year post-launch development of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is coming to an end. Masahiro Sakurai, the series' founder and game's director, announced to fans in a dramatic cinematic at today's Mr. Sakurai Presents that the final member entering the roster is Sora from Kingdom Hearts.
Sakurai returned to his office one last time to explain the significance of the Keyblade wielder. Sakurai stated that Sora was one of the most requested fighters in the Smash community, and that he was pleased to be able to finally include the character on the roster. The director provided a lengthy discussion of the character's utility in the roster, as he did in past Mr. Sakurai Presents, as well as his various color schemes.
Rising Falls, a Kingdom Hearts-themed stage, is brought along by Sora. The simple battleground features a single platform that travels across classic locations from the series, as well as nine new music from the original soundtracks by composer Yoko Shimomura. Although an Amiibo is in the works, the lineup is presently lacking a few new characters. Sakurai did reveal that Minecraft's Steve will be released in spring 2022, as well as the fact that Alex will be made into an Amiibo.
In the final wave of DLC, new Splatoon inspired Mii fighter costumes will join the new fighter, including an Octoling wig and Judd hat, as well as a Doom Slayer (aka Doomguy) gunner costume. The mainstream Kingdom Hearts titles will be coming to Nintendo Switch via cloud gaming, according to a late statement in the stream, however Sakurai did not provide a release date.
Fans had been waiting for their favorite characters and franchises to appear in the last DLC for the past week. Sora, Master Chief from Halo, Doomguy from DOOM, Kris from Deltarune 2, and a late-night entry of Goku from Dragonball were among the top contenders. Even with some accurate predictions, the crossover, which brings together Square Enix, Disney, and Nintendo in one big crossover, is still a surprise for many.
After the character is introduced, there will most certainly be balancing updates as well as basic server maintenance, however we don't know how long Ultimate will be supported by Nintendo. On October 18th, Sora arrives.
