If you’re looking for a good scare this October, look no further than South Korea’s latest Netflix original, Squid Game. Squid Game or Ojingeo Geim  is a South Korean survival drama streaming television series written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk.

The nine episode series, starring Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo and Wi Ha-joon, tells the story of a group of people who are buried in so much debt that it is impossible for them to pay. They are then taken and are forced to risk their lives in a mysterious survival game to win a cash prize of ₩45.6 billion (US$38.7 million).

The chilling, nightmare-ish, survival horror setting of the series gives it its unique flavor where the lives of multiple protagonists are in imminent danger. Squid Game is a story that is indeed a perfect fit for people who are celebrating halloween and are looking for a show to watch and enjoy in spirit of the season.

But if the introduction of the series alone is not enough to convince you to give Squid Game a watch, here are three spoiler free reasons on why you would want to watch Squid Game this October.

It’s not your usual horror story.

A very common trope in most horror stories involves ghosts and untamed spirits that are haunting people to death. But when a trope becomes so common, it gets boring and predictable. Squid Game however, provides a different approach in horror where control does not come from intangible spirits, but from normal human beings.

In the series we are shown that a great number of people are being held captive, forced to participate in deadly games and are killed with no remorse or hesitation.

The story may be fictional, but the true horror lies in the people, the sheer thought that human beings like your friends, neighbors and co-workers may be capable of things that are as horrid as the scenes in Squid Game.

Unlike the common ghost trope in the horror genre, a much closer to reality kind of horror can and always will be the most terrifying fact to anyone.

The thrill of the last man standing.

Another predictable trope in many stories out there, is when a story is centered in one character. With that thought given, the audience will always know and expect that that character will end up winning in the end.

Plot armor for the main character can often take the suspense away when watching a series or movie. Squid Game however, provides you with multiple characters in the story that you will get attached to and want to survive in the end.

But death is inevitable in this series, Squid Game is not afraid to kill off characters left and right, providing you the suspense you will be looking for in a horror series. 

With the thought of knowing that there will be only one man standing really riles up your expectations with every challenge that the characters will have to go through.
