Curtain Opens for Tony Awards

This year’s awards celebrate shows from the 2019–2020 season.

The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly affected live shows due to strict social distancing measures. Our favorite Broadway shows are one of those on the list. But the long wait is over as the Tony Awards held last Sunday night was filled with awaited theater stars and other celebrities.

"Tonight feels like a homecoming," said host Audra McDonald who feels nostalgic about being back on stage. "The lights are on, we are here, we are back."

After 18 months of zero performance due to the pandemic, shows are reopened but require the audience to be fully vaccinated and to wear masks. Big shows like "Hamilton", "The Lion King", and "Wicked" were reopened this month, which was welcomed with tears and joy on and off stage.

"Moulin Rouge! The Musical," bagged 10 awards, including best musical,  lead actor award for Aaron Tveit.

Carmen Pavlovic, a co-producer of "Moulin Rouge!," said every show deserved to get an award after the punishing last 18 months, including "the shows that opened, the shows that closed not to return, the shows that nearly opened, and of course the shows that paused and were fortunate enough to be reborn."

"The Inheritance," a playwright by Matthew Lopez, was named best play and won 2 other Tonys. The play was a portrait of gay life in the 21st century. "This is the 74th Tony Awards and yet I am only the first Latinate writer to win in this category," said Lopez. "This must change. We are a vibrant community ... We have so many stories to tell. They are inside of us, aching to come out."

The stage adaptation "A Christmas Carol," won five awards, including "Best Original Score".An honorary award was also given to The anti-racism non-profit Broadway Advocacy Coalition that fights to make theatre more diverse.

However it  was not a night for "Slave Play," with 12 nominations but none won. The play is a show about race and sexuality.
